Armored Corps with blank apex |
Armored Corps with unofficial star |
For a small and not widely known unit, there was a variety of insignia for the 1st PTG.
The men of the 527th Ordnance wore the III Armored Corps shoulder sleeve insignia while training.
They were eventually authorized to wear the Armor Force insignia, with a blank yellow apex,
which is what the majority of them wore.
Some of the men were creative with unauthorized additions to their Armor Force patch.
In China in 1945, S/Sgt. Gordon Gilliam came up with the idea of placing a five-pointed star
(from the CBI patch - representing U.S. Forces) in the apex. The commanding officer, Col. LeMoyne,
wouldn't authorize the wearing of the star.

5th Tank Battalion 1st PTG |
Although the 1st PTG had no distinctive insignia of its own, several men wore
special designs of their own to identify their battalions.
Members of the 3rd Battalion wore the insignia shown above, left.
The men of the 2nd Maintenance Battalion wore a shield with "TM" for Tank Maintenance.
Their insignia also indicated "CAI," Chinese Army in India.
The 5th Tank Battalion wore insignia similar to the shield of CBI, with Chinese star (sun) and the roman numeral 5.
