On The Ground Glass

In addition to their normal duties of taking aerial reconnaissance photos and creating technical images, the photographers of the 7th Photographic Technical Squadron also had time to capture images of the people and places they saw in India. This was especially true in 1945 as the Japanese were being driven back and victory was in sight.

The Photo Lab Section of the 7th PTS produced a single sheet photographic newsletter using these images. It was called On The Ground Glass referring to the ground glass used in photo developing. (Ground glass diffuses light due to its rough surface which is produced by abrasion or etching).

Twelve issues of On The Ground Glass along with five special issues and an unlabelled photo collage are presented on this site. All photographs feature India, its people and the "visiting" Americans.

How and to who these photo-newsletters were distributed is not known. If you can provide any information about On The Ground Glass, please contact me via e-mail.
