Sick and wounded men being evacuated by plane from the Burma fighting to a base hospital in Assam. Their wizened, scrawny bodies and forlorn faces reflect the wretched existence from which they flee. Many of the flight nurses on these unarmed planes were former airline stewardesses - pretty, brave, devoted to duty. Japanese Zeros and obscure mountain peaks combined to make this run a hazardous business.
