AERIAL VIEWS OF THE LEDO ROAD

These aerial photographs were taken between December 26, 1943 and January 3, 1944, with most being taken on January 2 and 3.  At the time, the Road was through to Shingbwiyang, about 103 miles from Ledo.  Construction was still in progress all along the way.  From the originals it appears that the photos were taken from a Liaison plane as what seems to be a wing strut is visible in some of the original photos.

Most of the original photos have identifying information added to the print which appears to be the date and time of the photo; camera, altitude and compass direction information; and a description of what is shown in the photo.  For example: (12/27 - 1030) (6 3/8 - 200' 120°) (LEDO ROAD ABOVE TOKYO "Y").  Most of the photos are stamped with "SECRET" on the back.  You can see scans of the original photos HERE.

All of the original photos have been edited to remove the information on the top and bottom edges and also the photographic information on the print itself.  Some of the photographs have been retouched to remove blemishes or to replace missing edges, etc.  See an example of this editing HERE.  The captions of the photos are as in the originals.
